Welcom Software is celebrating winning another award to add to their impressive trophy cabinet, with victory in the Ackrill Media Group Harrogate Business Awards; the company was crowned “Employer of the Year” at an awards ceremony on 29th March. This award comes hot on the heels of a double win at the York Press Business Awards (“Progress Through People” and “'Large Business of the Year”) and being shortlisted in the Computer Weekly “Best Places to Work in IT” awards within the last six months. The company has also just been announced as a finalist in the National Business Awards North East Regional Programme for 2007.

Having undertaken a radical review of business practices over the past three years and moved from the old and outdated “command and control” management system to a new, flatter structure with fewer levels of authority, Welcom is really beginning to see return from its investment. Its motivated and empowered people are delivering valuable and significant business benefits to the company and its clients, proving the theory that “software is only as good as the people who make it”.

To win this award, Welcom had to provide evidence of the measures taken to improve the working environment and to foster positive, forward-looking working relationships. In this respect there was rather an embarrassment of riches, as the creation of a new and dynamic culture has been central to the development of the business in recent years and has driven changes in both location and working practice. Two years ago, Welcom moved to new high-spec offices on the 10th floor of the Exchange building in the heart of Harrogate’s business community. With stunning views of the surrounding countryside and comfortable designated areas for socialising and relaxation, the offices maintain a calm and businesslike environment which is a pleasure to work in. People are encouraged to raise and discuss any problems or queries, with innovations such as “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” forms asking them to suggest solutions to their own problems; the people at Welcom really are in the driving seat. Staff development is a priority, with regular reviews addressing each person’s “Mind, Body and Soul” and Personality Profiling being carried out to ensure a “best fit” of resources to the tasks available.
